Public Talk: Getting a likeness - Nora Heysen and her portraits

  • Art Gallery of Western Australia Perth Cultural Centre Roe Street Perth Australia (map)

The Lester Prize for portraiture is one of Australia’s richest art prizes with a purse of $50,000. If Nora Heysen were still with us she would be having a go! As the first woman to win the Archibald Prize Nora was a portraitist of great skill yet she said, “There’s this awful thing called a likeness and portrait painters are always up against it with every commission. It has to look like the person and everyone has a different idea of how a person looks …”. I will be speaking in the Centenary Gallery surrounded by the Lester Prize finalists at the Art Gallery of Western Australia about the challenges Nora faced and how she navigated her life as artist and that pesky issue of ‘getting a likeness’.
