Biography is an art precisely to the extent that we recognise that what a biographer hopes to recapture is impossible to recapture absolutely – that is – the spirit and the truth of his or her subject’s life… In great biography, if not in painting or photography, warts make a portrait, and the biographer who is not prepared to tell all about his or her subject should take up another line of work.
